Grounding Myths
Grounding
Good grounding does not prevent surges.
A good up to date ground system consists of two eight foot ground rods in the earth along with an attachment to the cold water pipe and the interior gas system. Unfortunately this does not assure you that your electronic equipment will be protected from a lightning strike or surge coming into the power lines.
The only thing that will really take care of this is a Surge Arrestor. See the article on the subject elsewhere. (need a link here)
If a high voltage surge comes in through the power lines the ground will not help at all. Grounding allows people to safely touch any of the gas pipes, cold water pipes or hot water pipes without getting shocked. If a hot wire touches one of the pipes, it will short out the breaker instead of becoming a hazard.
